Motion and Emotion

I was talking with a friend of mine the other day about message prep and speaking on Sunday mornings and he made the comment that when he's listened to me lately, something's different.  He says he thinks I'm speaking with more passion and people can "sense" it, so lately, the messages have been 'better' (not that ones before were 'bad' but these are more intense I guess)

Now, whether my speaking is better or worse isn't the point.  What got me thinking was the idea that emotions matter.  Think about it.  Have you ever been in a "funk" and been around people who've noticed?  You may say the same things, meet in the same places, do the same stuff, but they can tell that something just isn't right.  You're going through the motions but all without the right emotions.

It works the other way too.  When people see someone who is full of life (has a lot of emotion and passion on display) they wonder if it's just a show.  But when they see it consistently, day in and day out, people are attracted to that, they notice.

So here's my question.  When you look at your friends, who are the ones you are attracted to and want to spend time with?  Is it the ones who seem to just be going through the motions or is it the ones who live with passion and emotion on display for anyone to see.  If you're just going through the motions of life, eat, work, sleep, play, etc.  are you really living?  Stop being afraid to smile, cry publicly, laugh loudly, cheer wildly, tell stories with excitement and share your thoughts and opinions with passion and conviction.  I second that emotion.

On a spiritual level...I am attracted to the people I can learn from...the persons that can be counted worthy of double honor that labor in the word and doctrine (1st Timothy 5:17).The unashamed workman who rightly divides the word of truth, knowing all the Bible was written FOR us (Romans 15:4), but not all of the Bible was written TO us (Ephesians 3:2). Some of the most passionate and emotional preachers and teachers I know are the most confused folks when it comes to rightly dividing the word of truth as God, the author and finisher of our faith requires it to be read and taught.

Emotions and feelings change faster than the weather in NC and are not to be trusted. When I was a baby Christian, I was often attracted to the preacher or teacher who would show a real passion for what he was doing, never ever questioning what was being taught because he was so convinced and sincere about what his message was. Later, to my surprise I discovered that not only was he sincere, but he was sincerely wrong! After all, don't most preachers gravitate to the OT books of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John because of the "red letters" spoken by Jesus, they must be more important than the black letters. The Gospel that saves our never dying soul isn't in the "red letters" at all!...if you are saved today, it can only be the result of the "black letters" contained in Paul's writings...ALONE!

Am I emotional?...absolutely...I can cry one minute and laugh the next...In fact, when I read some of these blogs and read how goofy they are when it comes to a doctrinal level...it makes me laugh until I realize how serious a problem it is...then it is worthy of a tear or two. Am I attracted to a passionate or emotional teacher or preacher...ONLY if they are teaching or preaching applicable truth for the church, which is His body. If they are wrapped up in story telling or taking Israel's covenant doctrine and applying it to unsuspecting listeners who don't know any better...I get really emotional then,,,GRRRRRRRR

On a personal level...I am more attracted to the folks that need or desire edification,.. function...2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Also, we are instructed to Romans 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. So, emotions do have a proper place...for comfort.

As far as the "living" part....it is not my life any longer...I gave that up quite a while ago..Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me....It's Christ in me now. Not "born again"...but...Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.....

Here I go again,,,,writing a book..LOL...

Grace and Peace
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

I have not had a chance to review Sunday's message yet... it was one of your stronger and more powerful message.

Emotions played a lot in your message being awesome. You did not come off as being condescending like you sometimes do when talking about stupid stuff people do... you know when you talk in your stupid people voice!

Anyway... too late to be critiquing - Good talk sunday...
